How to Structure Your Google Ads Account for Maximum ROI
After managing over $5M in Google Ads spend across 200+ campaigns, I've learned that account structure is the single most important factor in campaign performance. Get it right, and everything else becomes easier. Get it wrong, and you'll fight an uphill battle forever.
Why Account Structure Matters
A well-structured account gives you:
- Clear visibility into what's working and what's not
- Better quality scores through relevant ad groups
- Easier budget management and optimization
- Scalable campaigns that don't break as you grow
The Account Structure I Use
Here's the hierarchy I recommend for most accounts:
- Account Level - Conversion tracking, shared budgets, account-level negative keywords
- Campaign Level - Separate campaigns by match type, device, or audience
- Ad Group Level - Tightly themed groups of 5-10 keywords
- Ad Level - 3-4 responsive search ads per ad group
Campaign Types and When to Use Them
Each campaign type serves a different purpose in your overall strategy:
- Search Campaigns - For capturing high-intent traffic
- Shopping Campaigns - For e-commerce product listings
- Display Campaigns - For brand awareness and retargeting
- Performance Max - For full-funnel automation across all channels
Naming Conventions
Consistent naming makes reporting infinitely easier. Here's my format:
[Campaign Type] - [Match Type] - [Product/Service] - [Audience]
Example: Search - Exact - Running Shoes - Women
